My housemate declares that Tad's limbs are merely "fibers" or some sort of flagella.
Overall, at this point in Tad's development, they appear to be only decorative in nature. They truly seem quite useless. It's amazing to think that Tad (if he survives his adolescence) will someday have limbs like L & H.
[See Tad just to the NW of the boy's head in photo? He's sooooo cuuuuuute!!!]

I think that at this stage in the game, Tad's appendages actually are, if you watch closely, quite useful. He flaps them about while locomoting, like a big newt, in the front-to-back herky-jerky newt-like way: when the front of the body is facing left, the back of the body is facing right, the two left side appendages coming close together. He probably used to be like an eel, and use his slim razor-like form to move in much the same way a snake does. But I can assure you, now those little footsies are grabbing the ground (ah... bottom of the newt bowl) and using the friction therein created to propel himself about.
Newt biomechanics are fun! I really appreciate your blog- I'm your biggest fan!
